FYP 2 - Critique 2 Media Zone Trigger

This is Media Zone Trigger where I can trigger a place to play a Sound File.

Demo will be presented in class.

FYP 2 CRITIQUE 2 Back to Basic

This is Back To Basic 9. This software basically is hacking the keyboard so when we are typing on the keyboard, it will produce sound. We can key in the key from A-Z and with some keys that stay on the left side of the Enter key.

The software startup.

File > Open Setup

Then look for .btb files, ONLY.

After loading the .btb files, the interface will change into another color. During the startup, there's no sound if we push button on our keyboard.

Notice that sound files will be loaded into this area so when we are typing, sound will be triggered.

This is how it looks like when we are typing it.

Once again, this software is called Back To Basic9 from http://www.wizardmaster.com/bludgeonsoft/audio.html

FYP 2 Critique 2 MORE PLEASE

This is the OpenKinect Installation Guide @ OpenKinect.org

This is the source from http://www.ros.org/wiki/kinect_tools

This guy he is using Ubuntu operating system, so as he listed there for Windows OS will be partial functionality and just enough to be useful in some situations only.

More to come... Cheers!

FYP 2 - Critique 2 (Working Progress) CONT Some More

This is another way of using Kinect with WiiMote. This also another new way of playing with Kinect, but this guy also the same, only showing the playing method, not the hacking method. Coding and Hacking still looking for it. It is really hard to look for coding for Kinect.

http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/980/article/kinect-hacked-open-source-driver-demo-video-with-download-link-released/

This is a link to a website where it provides the open source driver and the demo video with it.

FYP 2 - Critique 2 (Working Progress) CONT

This is Media Zone Trigger where I will be used as the Drum Kit. BUT! There is always a BUT. It is only a Trial Version. So, when I was so excited to get into it, create the hot spot and try to program everything into place, IT IS NOT PROGRAMMABLE because it is not a FULL VERSION! Only full version gets the Full Function. Still looking for the solution for this. "ONLINE SOLUTION"

Another Instruments is going to be a Circuit Bending method where using Mixer to create sound. Since my project is more to Experimental Music, and Mr.Kok Yoong said change the way of playing instead of just stay with one. I don't have any photos yet because the thing is with Mr.Kok Yoong. Speakers and Mixer.

FYP 2 - Critique 2 (Working Progress)

Here it comes the Critique 2. So, for now I've been doing deeeeeeep research on Kinect with Open Kinect Driver. Everything is still in progress because the Kinect, is still new in the market for people to hack around. When I tried to search "Kinect Hack" or "Kinect Piano Coding", it will just appear the work has been done instead of showing the source to get to the coding part. So, still working on Kinect.

This is where I download the open source driver for Kinect, I'm not sure whether is the correct one or not.

This is something could do with Kinect if I'm able to hack into it. It is the hacking method I wanted to do, but it didn't shows how it has been hacked.

To Be Continued...

How To!

This post basically will be how am I going to do with the tools and software that I have listed in the previous post.

HOW TO use Zone Trigger.
(There are Zone Trigger, and Media Zone Trigger. Media version is specially for audio and video purposes)

HOW TO do Circuit Bending.

Ready, Set, GO! FYP TOO! (2)

This is the first post for FYP TOO! FYP 2!
Let me reintroduce myself again.

Stefan Tan Tong Wei

The first thing that need to do is to get our Floorplan, Flowchart, and Storyboard done.

3 pieces of paper submitted to Mr.Kok Yoong, and I only got the my floorplan and flowchart digital file with me. Storyboard I only sketch on paper.

Overall, I'm going to exhibit my work in a huge place if it is available but at least, 20 feet by 20 feet floor spaces. Before I continue, my work is called Music Space where it is more to experimental music in Ubiquitous Computing environment.

Next, there will be four 3feet by 3feet boxes placed in that space facing each other. Each box will represent by different kind of "INSTRUMENT".

Referencing Website & Mentor Website

After doing research through the net and did some discussion with Mr.Kok Yoong, some method already been decided to use in the project.

Tools & Software (or Method)
Circuit Bending is one of the method that will use in my project. Circuit Bending is something like Mr.Lee Kwang did during our Sound Workshop. For more information, can logon to his website or even search his name in youtube and there will be an answer.

Zone Trigger will be used as well to create the transparent instrument on the box. This is where the user waves their hand through the box, it will produce sound.

Zone Trigger Official Website

Kinect will be considered too since it has the very sensitive motion detection. Where for Kinect, it will use as a transparent Piano. Kinect uses infrared to detect human body and that's why it is very sensitive.

and of course, the Official Website for Kinect

Conceptual Diagram

So, after all the digital sketches and flowchart, this is the Conceptual Diagram. I've decided to use 4 instruments for the installation, which are Guitar, Piano, Flute and Drum. So basically the installation will be in a room; that is why the title changed to Music Space.

This is the top view of the installation. Each side on the back is with Two speakers that play the sound from the box that is link to it. Each of every box plays different sound.

Content Aquisition

Original Proposal:

Title : Blend'er (changed to Music Space)

Background :
Ubiqutous Computing Music Making(UCMM) is very popular nowadays. For example, aM Laboratory create music making with writing, drawing, clicking and so on. On the other hand, Nike Music Shoe is another great example of UCMM. They are using shoes, plug in with several sensors and starting making some sounds/music. Overall, shoes are not the main point, the thing that makes this whole installation looks great is the sensor and the programming of it. Bend sensors, acceleration sensor, arduino, and so on. These sensors are programmed to software, called Pro Tools where people are using it for sound recording or music making.

Problem Identification:
During the golden times, people must be taught to use instruments to play music/making music. Now, Ubiquitous Computing Music Making style makes everyone can play an instrument without knowing anything about the instrument or taking a lesson to learn about it.

Aim & Objectives:
• To let people enjoy and have fun of Ubiquitous Computing Music Making and Electronic Music Making

• To bring music making into another level

• To challenge the current music making way

Motivation:
Nike Music Shoe is the installation that really inspire me. This installation give me the motivation of doing it.

Ideation & Concept:
Overall, it is going to be user interact with objects that can make sound to create music.

This is a flowchart together with a top view of the installation. Before I get lost direction, I decided to do a digital sketch and flowchart to direct myself back to track.
